Artist Statement
For this project, I used a wide variety of materials ranging from cardboard to paint. The two types of architecture that inspired this sculpture was Gothic and Art Nouveau. The gothic architecture utilizes linear shapes and dark colors. The structures themselves tower over the viewer. The main structure of my sculpture is based on this linear shapes. I covered them with black masking tape to give a ‘cracked’ surface to mimic the ribbed vaulting used in most Gothic Architecture. The second type of architecture is incorporated in the use of the brown paper. Art Nouveau drastically differs from Gothic. Art Nouveau uses organic shapes, flowing lines, and floral decorations. This architecture looks more like something from a fantasy world. By shaping the brown paper I was able to mock these organic, flowing lines, giving the sculpture movement.
