Artist Statement

As a part of my personality, I identify with three different symbols. The Aries zodiac, a phoenix, and a panda bear. I tried to incorporate these symbols into my Masked Identity. From the first sign, Aries, which is represented through the ram, I decided to recreate rams horns. The horns were created through wire and garbage bags that I painted black and highlighted with gold. The second symbol, phoenix, was incorporated into the mask through the use of red, yellow, orange, and brown feathers. I pattered the feathers across the mask to mimic the look of fire. Finally, the panda bear was brought into the design through the use of white feathers and black ribbon. I often joke about how my personality falls into the stereotypes commonly associated with an Aries, Spiteful, hot-headed at times, impatient, moody, and determined. My only tattoo is of a phoenix, a symbol of power and hardship for me, I am able to overcome anything in my life, I can rise above my grief. I have been through hard times before, and I can do it again. For a majority of my life, I was always referred to as ‘Amanda Panda’ by my friends and family. As I child I was obsessed with panda bears. My father fed into my panda addiction and would always buy me a new toy panda bear.
