Artist Statement:
Personally, I was very nervous going into these drawings, I was worried mine wouldn’t be abstract enough and teeter on the line between art and nonart. The first few drawings were very restrained, making lines and other marks using more conventional materials like pastels and paints. It wasn’t until the third transformation did I decide to start experimenting by using unconventional objects in my work. I started off by using leaves and branches as a stencil for spray paint and then responding to those marks on the page with acrylics. The fourth transformation I became more experimental and less worried about how it looked. I used objects in an old art bag I found- some old tracing paper and a spool of ribbon. The next transformation I turned my attention from adding to the piece rather than what I could take away from it. I scraped off the ribbon and cut away the access. The last transformation revolved around the idea of deconstruction the piece. I added the ribbon back into the drawing and cut out major components and reorganized them into the final drawing. From the first drawing to the last drawing, I saw major growth in my work and myself. I became more experimental, more daring. These drawings forced me out of my comfort zone by making a composition that falls into the contemporary movement.
