Mask Sculpture

Artist Statement
An object that has become a common need for the simple task of going outside. Everyone has one now, whether it be professional or homemade. The mask is meant to help protect us while offering some sort of comfort to the people wear it that they’re going to be safe against the elements of the unknown. The structure I built encompasses a form, to give it a sense of security and safety.  The gaps woven into the object indicate the uncertain nature of these masks, the questions we as a society are constantly asking, are they really going to protect us? Are they effective enough to keep us safe from the unknown? There is a sense of security given to this form it encompassed, yet it is a barrier with gaps. The materiality of the object as well, something easy to find, cheap, and pliable.  The masks we find today, or more so the lack of them, has pushed us to create our own DIY masks. These masks, cheaper and easier to find, leading to a bigger risk of being unsafe.
