Shell Sculpture
Artist Statement
This sculpture was inspired by the formal and
narrative qualities associated with a conch shell. These objects are inanimate,
and thus have no life to them I am fascinated to emulate the movement and flow
of these objects. The Conch shells’ swirling crown combined with the interior
space is reminiscent of a form exploding open. The scale of this sculpture is
much smaller than the actual object itself to give this object a smaller, more delicate
detailing of the object it represents. The conch shell once provided shelter for
a delicate living form at the bottom of the crushing abyss. My sculpture translates
these observations to visually communicate ideas about fragility in the natural
world.
